Simon is married with 2 children. He also has lived in Christchurch most of his life. He joined the New Zealand Police in 1983 as a Sworn officer. Two years later he transferred to the Criminal Investigation Branch in Christchurch. Simon moved through the ranks reaching the rank of Detective Sergeant in 1994. After working on many high profile cases he decided it was time to move on.
In 1999 Simon left the New Zealand Police to own and operate the Madeira Hotel in the tourist town of Akaroa. This business thrived under his ownership and was sold two years later.
Simon was then employed as a consultant with a large private New Zealand immgration company and a short time later he was promoted to the South Island Manager of the newly formed South Island Branch.
In 2003 Simon again returned to the Hotel industry, operating a large hotel in the tourist town of Hanmer Springs.
